Caloric Content of Alcoholic Beverages

The predominant goal of The Domino Strategy is to increase people’s health and safety. The Strategy would not be complete without noting that alcoholic beverages often have a high caloric value.

The caloric content of wine versus liquor is a classic example of “looks can be deceiving.” A single shot of liquor (1.5oz) can contain upwards of 200 calories. In comparison, a 4.0 oz. of glass of wine contains approximately 85 calories. The average caloric content of beer is 150 calories, with a Margarita anywhere from 250 – 350 calories.

College students, primarily women, will often skip meals to allow for drinks. This is a potentially dangerous, but popular practice. Eating a good meal lines the stomach and slows the rate at which alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream.
