Frequently Asked Questions
Here are ten of the most common questions we are asked. If you have
any other questions you can email or call FACE and we will be happy to help.
- Who is FACE? FACE is a national non-profit organization
that focuses specifically on alcohol issues.
- What do you do? FACE conducts work in three areas:
- We provide research-based public information resources that include films,
television and radio public service announcements, billboards, theater ads,
PowerPoint presentations and a variety of print products (posters,
brochures, bookmarks, camera-ready art).
- We provide face-to-face and online training. Our training is designed
to identify contributing factors related to alcohol problems and then determine
actions to reduce those problems.
- FACE works with collaborating partners at the local, state and national level
to reduce alcohol problems. We document examples of community actions that
result in positive change and make these stories available to others.
- How are you funded? FACE recieves funding from private corporate
foundations, private family and community foundations, individual donors, and through
the sale of our materials. FACE does not accept funding from the alcohol beverage industry.
- Is FACE prohibitionist? No, FACE supports the legal, safe, low-risk use
of alcohol; we do not support prohibition as a solution to alcohol-related problems.
- If you sell products and services, doesn't that make you a for-profit
corporation? No, all of our products and services fit the mission of FACE - to provide
research-based resources for individuals and organizations to take action on alcohol issues.
As a result, the revenue from FACE sales goes back into the development of new resources.
- If you receive funding from foundations, why do you charge for products and services? Almost all private funding sources require a cash match for grants they give. Instead of
delaying product development to find other sources of "cash match" funding for
new projects, FACE uses revenues generated from the sales and services of new projects as
our cash match. In addition, if all potential sources of funding ended tomorrow, FACE
would have an income stream that at a minimum would allow us to continue to operate.
- What does FACE stand for? When FACE first started in 1989, it stood for Facing
Alcohol Concerns through Education. As we grew, we expanded beyond educational approaches.
However, by that time, people knew who FACE was and we decided to keep the name. Today,
we put a "face" on alcohol issues and we are starting to put a "face"
on the people who are doing something about those issues.
- Where is FACE located? In Clare, Michigan, a rural community of approximately 3,200 people
located in the central part of the lower peninsula in Michigan.
- What is your mission? To provide the resources for individuals and organizaitons to take
action on alcohol issues. We adhere to these Guiding Principles:
- Imagine the future.
- Tell the truth.
- Build on scientific evidence.
- Refuse censorship.
- Stay at the edge.
- Create action.
- Generate results.
- What does FACE hope to accomplish? Our vision for the future is simple - help create
healthy and robust communities where everyone can experience life to its full potential.
Where families can attend sporting events without the risk of hearing obscene language
and wading through spilled beer. Where college kids can be fully engaged in one the most
exciting times of their lives without increased risk of guilt, injury or death. Where
businesses reap the rewards of a healthier, more productive workforce. And where the
cultural pastime is not drinking, but simply enjoying the company of friends and family.
